Story of Salvation Snacks

Candy DeVore

Children learn in many different ways, so the more ways we can reinforce a lesson, the better they will remember it. We have told them the story of salvation and shared pictures—how about letting them make “story of salvation” sandwiches and let them taste the lesson as well.

If you do not want to have the children eat in between meals, go through the exercise and put the snacks in a plastic snack bag for the children to assemble and eat later.

Items Needed

• Ritz or Club crackers (make sure whatever type of cracker you use has a golden color)
• Sliced black olives—have a few whole olives to show the children
• Sliced tomatoes—have a whole one to show the children
• Cream cheese
• Unpeeled cucumbers or lettuce

Here’s What to Do

Say the following as you give the children their snack:

“Here are two crackers. What color are they? They look gold to me and that reminds me of heaven. Don’t you want to go there?

“Here are two olives. What color are they? Black reminds me of sin. Sin separates us from God. Put your olives on top of our crackers—our sins stand between us and heaven.

“Here is a tomato. What color is a tomato? That’s right, it’s red! Red reminds me of Jesus. He died to cover my sins. Let’s take our tomato slices and put them on top of the olives. See, now you can’t even see them!

“Here is some cream cheese—it’s white. Can anyone tell me what it represents? It represents purity that comes from Jesus. When I love Jesus—all His goodness covers all my sin. Let’s spread it on our second cracker and set it aside.

“What is this? (cucumber slices or lettuce leaves). What color is the cucumber (lettuce)? It’s green! The green represents growing in Jesus and that’s what we want to do. Every day we love Jesus—we grow and become more like Him.

“Now you can put your cracker with the cream cheese on top. You see, we are separated from God by sin but Jesus came to die for us and live for us, and change us so we can go to heaven with Him. You can eat your snack and see how good it tastes!”
